First National Astronomy Quiz finals
October 2006 - Aimed at Grade 7 learners, AstroQuiz 2006 was part of SAASTA's contribution to Astronomy Month. The winning team from each centre, arrived at HartRAO on 27 October for the finals.

New Astronomy Month resources
October 2006 - It's Astronomy Month and activities include cartoons, workshops and the SAASTA National Astronomy Quiz for Grade 7 learners.

Win a trip to Mapungubwe
September 2006 - It's African Origins Month and activities include cartoons, workshops, stand-up comedy routines, field trips to palaeontology sites and a competition aimed at tertiary students, whereby the winners will go on a field trip to Mapungubwe on 29 September 2006

African ministers agree reform of science education
August 2006 - Science and technology teaching must undergo reform at all levels of African educational systems, according to a ten-year plan adopted by the continent's education ministers. The ministers approved the African Union's 2006-2015 plan of action for education at a meeting last week (2-4 August) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

June 2006 - DST and SAASTA have produced some wonderful downloadable cartoons to celebrate Antarctica Month 2006.

New PUB illustrative posters!
May 2006 - The Public Understanding of Biotechnology programme has released some new illustrative posters including one on wetlands, a poster explaining how and why farmers practice selective breeding and one on biotechnology and medicinal plants. These valuable teaching aids are free to download and use.

2005/6 SA Science Lens winners announced!
April 2006 - Yet again, the SA Science Lens photography competition was highly successful. This round attracted 439 entries of a very high standard. Entries were received from all over South Africa from professional and amateur photographers, communicators, school learners, teachers, and research scientists.

March Science festivals
March 2006 - Two exciting science festivals are being held in March this year. Science Unlimited 2006 is being held in Pretoria, Gauteng, from 6 - 10 March and the Sasol SciFest in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape from 22 - 28 March 2006.

SA Science Lens Photographic Competition overwhelmed by entries
February 2006 - The fourth round of the SA Science Lens competition has been highly successful. The competition attracted hundreds of visually exciting and interesting entries. This is South Africa's only photographic competition specifically aimed at illustrating and communicating the excitement and impact of science. The judging will be taking please at the end of February 2006. Thank you to all who entered!

Name the Satellite Challenge
January 2006 - Learners in grades 7 to 12 are invited to name South Africa's second micro satellite. South Africa is currently building its second micro satellite as part of an integrated space programme. This satellite will need a name when it is launched later this year … and you can decide on that name! You can win a computer or a visit to the construction of the satellite. Celebrate South Africa's space programme … and our new micro satellite!
